Book A–Z of Embroidery Stitches: A Complete Manual for the Beginner Through to the Advanced Embroiderer (A–Z of Needlecraft) Review :

First, I'm delighted that everyone here seems to love this book. Let me explain why you may not.I own about 700 needlework books including dozens of stitch guides, encyclopedias and dictionaries. These are books I strongly suggest you consider instead: Rebecca Ringquist's Embroidery Workshops: A Bend-the-Rules Primer  --this is the newest stitch guide. You get an actual piece of FABRIC with the stitch areas printed on. You go into the Intro and see that exact piece from the back. You go further into the book and see the entire front of the piece almost finished. You go to every single stitch included and see truly easy directions. Or see how inexpensive these are on Amazon: Stitch Sampler: The Ultimate Visual Dictionary to Over 200 Classic Stitches Encyclopedia of Embroidery Stitches, Including Crewel (Dover Embroidery, Needlepoint) Cross N Patch A Collection of Beautiful Stitches  (I used this to make a band sampler bellpull with over 100 different stitches.Even this classic written over 100 years ago has better illustrations: Mary Thomas's Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches I've been browsing this reviewed book and its successor: A-Z of Embroidery Stitches 2 (A-Z of Needlecraft) and as I page through both, I can't understand why they're not good guides.Ah, I put my finger on it: there are no diagrams, the pictures are too tiny, and the beginning foundation steps are often glossed over. Even though I am an expert stitcher I'd have to go back to Square One and consult the above stitch books in order to make almost any stitch here. Let me point these out in the Look Inside feature at the top of the page: scroll down to the page entitled "Beginning and ending thread" and look at the 7 photos. Clear? Nope. Now scroll down to the Algerian Eye Stitch. This is one of the most common surface stitches. In order to learn this stitch, you'll have to carefully study the picture as you fumble to translate its placement onto the fabric in your hands. Without showing this on a grid or graph paper, you'll have to come back again and again to figure out where and how to begin and over how many threads to bring your needle. And you know what: this stitch can be done over a reasonably unlimited size block or circle with the minimum of 8 arms as shown to maybe 2 dozen arms. The worst thing is that an eyelet stitch has a HOLE in the middle. The Rhodes stitch is made the same as the Algerian eye except instead of a hole in the middle, you overlap the threads in the middle. This eyelet may as well be a Rhodes stitch. Now scoot down to the Arrowhead Stitch: how are you going to translate that to your fabric? The A, B, C, and D will be hard to place because there's NO DIAGRAM to refer to. So the A~Z line of Search Press books...can't recommend unless you're an advanced stitcher. The stitch that I use to gauge the usefulness of a stitch guide is the bullion knot (in this A~Z series, this book of motifs uses EXCLUSIVELY bullions: A-Z of Embroidered Motifs (A-Z of Needlecraft) ) because it's one of the least "intuitive" stitches and it takes about 4-7 steps to learn it. (I have to practice it a few times before I get the swing of it and I've used it many times.) This reviewed book has FOURTEEN photos and they're TERRIBLE!! I held the book at arm's length and all I see is the woman's beautifully manicured thumb and index finger (please don't use red nail polish and matching red thread if you want to be clear) and barely the stitch. And then I held the book close and measured the stitch with a ruler: 7mm or less than 1/4"...come on!!! Over two whole pages, you can't display this stitch more clearly??I'm avoiding the Search Press A~Z series books but I really like these: Silk Shading (Essential Stitch Guides) Crewel Intentions: Fresh Ideas for Jacobean Embroidery Beginner's Guide to Drawn Thread Embroidery (Beginner's Guide to Needlecraft) I hate to be such a bummer...but I'm trying to be helpful!
I am going to give this book two stars because the introductory information is good IF you are a total beginner. But that is as far as it goes. If you get the Kindle format it is HORRIBLE,two bags on on Kindle screen, making it very hard to read. But, aside from that, it's just not a very good book. The pictures are not well done, and there are many variations on the same stitch, so it's more like 70 stitches with variations. If you are a complete and total beginning this is an OK book, but aside from that - MEH.
